Why Gardening Means So Much to Me
Gardening holds a special place in my heart. It's more than just a hobby—it's a meaningful act that can transform your life in countless ways. To me, gardening isn’t simply about pulling weeds (though I do have my own thoughts on weeding—but that’s a story for another day). At its core, gardening is about nurturing. Nurturing the soil, the tiny seedlings, the Earth itself—and, perhaps most importantly, nurturing yourself.
Every time a plant grows, I feel like I grow too. There’s something magical about the process—watching life unfold before your eyes, learning as the plants learn. Did you know that plants are incredibly perceptive? They can sense and respond to the beings around them. Science is beginning to catch up with what ancient traditions have long known: plants can recognize you, feel your presence, and yes—care for you.
There are even ancient practices that suggest plants will grow specifically for you and your unique needs once a connection is formed. It's something I’ll be diving into more deeply in an upcoming workshop, because it's a topic too rich and layered to capture fully in a single post.
For me, gardening is about connection—the very act of connecting. As human beings, we need connection not only with each other but with the world around us. When we connect to the environment, we find balance. We feel grounded. We walk with more confidence and peace.
Gardening brings me home to myself, again and again.
If I Could Leave One Lasting Gift Today…
It would be this:
Connecting to the plants around you is simple—and powerful.
It can start with something as small as sitting by a tree.
Touch the bark. Take a slow, steady breath in.
Feel what you feel.
Notice what thoughts arise.
Wiggle your toes in the grass—feel the coolness, the softness.
Gently touch a leaf and let its scent awaken your senses.
Plants give us so much.
Their presence soothes our nervous systems, balances our emotions, and even supports us chemically in ways we’re only beginning to understand.
But the most important reaction of all?
It’s the one that happens inside of us when we remember we’re part of nature.
Go forth and spread your wings with gardening!
